THE USA TOUR and BEYOND

The From the Edge exhibit will tour museums and galleries in the United States from September 2011 through December 2012 with expected stops in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and other cities. In March of 2012, it will be featured at the USITT National Conference.

USITT wishes to raise awareness of the Prague Quadrennial and Design within the United States. With each stop local theatres and universities can plan a constellation of events to accompany the exhibit including gallery tours, workshops and local performances.  If in the home town of one of the curators, curatorial gallery walks can also be planned.

This dynamic exhibition will feature innovative production companies and theatre artists who have pushed traditional definitions of theatre design. Featuring younger artists and companies, inclusion in the exhibit focuses on new and devised work as well as fresh interpretations of existing pieces. Included will be designs that fearlessly tackle the socio-political climate of the past four years, and that embrace multiculturalism, green practice, and community building. The curators of the exhibit look to designers who have been empowered with image-based story-telling and expect to present work that will not only comment on the status of the field of theatre design, but lead it.

From the Edge will come alive using elements of the creative process such as models, sketches, paintings, properties, costumes, production photos and performance DVDs. The viewer will gain an understanding of the production process from initial ideas to performance. This exhibit will be attractive to audiences on many levels. The display of theatre design in museums is a unique project and will provide a new arena of knowledge for the visitors. With a focus on innovative and community-based works, guests will feel a closer connection to the productions than they might with traditional historical productions. The nature of the exhibit itself will be theatrical, with interactive displays, performance videos, and sound kiosks, interviews with designers to illuminate their creative processes.

A full color catalogue will be published to accompany the exhibit. It will include an introductory essay to contextualize the works, as well as entries about each theatre company and designer to contextualize their contributions in the view of current practice.
